Ok here's the deal.
I'm applying to five colleges, only three of which I'm really interested in. Two of the three are too far away for my liking and also too expensive. I don't want to walk away from college in debt. I also don't think I'm likely to get a big enough scholarship from either of these schools to compensate for the distance from home.
UC Santa Cruz is the only school I really want to go to. I have good grades, and good extracurricular stuff, but there's a chance I won't get in.
If I don't, I honestly don't want to go to college anywhere else. Heck, I didn't want to go to college right after graduating in the first place. I never have, however if I get into Santa Cruz, I'd be fine with it.
But if I don't, here's what I'm starting to think about, joining either the peace corps, or a similar organization and spending a year traveling and doing community service.
This is a very new idea, but the more I think about it the more I like it. I always wanted to travel after graduating high school, and this way I could do it cheaply, and at the same time do some good.
I haven't presented this idea to my parents yet. I think I'm going to wait until I get accepted or rejected by Santa Cruz.
Why does it feel like all of a sudden adulthood is approaching at a much greater rate than I noticed before?

Sounds like a good plan to me. If you really don't want to go to the other two colleges, I wouldn't bother applying.
You may want to consider looking into outside scholarships and grants (those not offered by the colleges themselves)- there is a Peterson's guide that should be in your local library.
Or you can always go to community college like me!
